  • Summer Dnd Character Introduction

I know, I know, this is a few weeks late. Simply, I forgot to make the blog post. Anyway, meet Dandelion. They're my player character for a summer campaign. They're a reborn ranger of the swarmkeeper concalve. Dandelion knows nothing or their life before waking up in the shaded flower meadow, nor what magics allowed them to exist in this peculiar state of being. Murky memories of their past life haunt their mind and propel them on a journey to discover the soul that once inhabited this body. Below is the illustration I created of Dandelion. As stated before, I've been working on creating scenes around my characters so this art was certainly a journey (I think this illustration has the most amount of layers of an drawing I've ever made). I also had to learn how to create a custom brush in Clip Studio Paint to draw in all of the bees. There was no way in the Nine Hells that I was going to paint them all in individually. I did the same with the skulls in the grass. It was a lot of work just for most of it to be covered up, but now I have a brush that can quickly create pile of skulls. I intend to get a lot of use out of that brush, haha. Below below, I also included a PDF of Dandelion's current character sheet in case a DnD nerd was curious.

Whoops, went a little quiet for a bit. I've been working on stuff, though admittedly as a slow pace. However, I have finished the illustration from last WIP Wednesday and started rendering the image below. This time of the year is pretty busy for me outside of the artworld. I've been doing a lot of yardwork and planting in the garden before summer kicks in. So by the end of the day, I only have energy to doodle in the sketchbook and I also gained a hyperfixation on a new original character. I only want to draw him right now and maybe I'll include his sketches in next week's post. But now, I need to hunker down and get stuff done.

Hey all! I'm back again with progress on a new illustration in the cultist series. I managed to finish the previous illustration and I really think I nailed the rainy city street prompt I gave myself. I've learned a lot about drawing backgrounds and how to place a character in a scene. That's the main goal of this series. I expect not to like some of them (like the first illustration) and that's okay. Art is a journey. It's okay to not be fully happy with a finished drawing, but it's important to understand what aspects of a piece you don't like so that you can learn for the future. Once I complete a few more, I might write a reflection where I compare the illustrations and discuss what I learned. Writing these breakdrowns will be really important, I think. Here's where I'm at currently. I plan on having this character perform on a stage with an audience in shadow. We'll see if I achieve that. After this illustration, I'm taking a brief break on the series to work on a fun piece that I plan on using for poster and t-shirt designs. If anyone has recommendations for online print stores to sell from, feel free to chime in. I have some ideas, but am all for hearing others' opinions. Final thought: Friday is session 0 for my Dnd group's summer campaign. Expect a post either late Friday or early Saturday showing off my character. See you then!

Happy Wednesday everyone! Sorry about not posting last week. I really have no excuse other than I forgot to, but I did finish the piece I was working on. I won't show it now, but I will leave a hint that it's an illustration of my character for a summer Dungeons and Dragons campaign. I'll post the illustration along with some info and a character sheet after our session 0 next week. I am resuming my illustration series on the cultists from the Church of Four Humors. Hopefully, I'll finish the WIP shown below by Monday but this is my birthday weekend. Also, my husband and I are doing a lot of planting in our garden and yardwork this week so my time is stretched thin. All to say, I'm going to try to have a WIP of the next piece for you guys next week. Happy drawing!

  • *Not* WIP Wednesday

I don't really have any wips to show on this cloudy and muggy Wednesday afternoon because at 2am this morning, I finished the main piece I've been working on the past week. There's a few other projects I'm tinkering on, such as some character sheets for some alien characters and some worldbuilding references for a fantasy world, but I don't want to show any of that off until I'm a bit further on. This is the piece I finished, The Phlegmatic Nun. For much of the drawing, the background was quite a bit larger, but I couldn't work it to a point that I was happy with. So, I cropped the image in closer to the character since she's the star of the piece anyway. Still not pleased with the background, but I had spent enough time on the piece and was a great learning moment. Hopefully on the next illustration of a Four Humors cult member, I can find a better composition for the background. I'll worry about that later. Time to relax.

Thankfully, I did not get blown away in the storms that rolled through my area last night. The severe weather event started later than predicted, so everything had weakened before hitting my house. I absolutely love storms but am not a fan of worrying about the threat of tornados over night. I hope everyone else who was under the threat is safe and dry and wish for speedy recovery for the communities affected by severe weather. That said, I'm happy to show y'all what I've worked on from 3/27/24- 4/3/24: This is the last batch of drawings of cultists from the Church of Four Humors for now. Once I finish the lineart and add the flat colors for the last drawing, I can start finishing these out. I have a lot to do, and I'm going to keep fleshing their world out. I tend to flip flop between my different stories and this is the one I currently have interest in working on so expect to see more works in progress and maybe a few blog posts talking about lore. I would like to add more content to this blog other than the weekly WIP Wednesday. I'll still work on other projects while I focus on this one since I have plenty of sketches in my WIP folder of shame needing some love, but I want to get all these illustrations done first. Stay tuned and happy drawing!

This week's theme was flat color. I've been working on so much line art lately that I have a lot of illustrations needing a bit of color. I finished one piece this week, which was the rooster rebel shown in last week's WIP Wednesday. The finished illustration will be on the site soon. Besides that, I have a few more that have gotten their flat colors with more on the way. Here's what I worked on from 3/20/24- 3/27/24: I colored some cultists and an assassion, how fun. I also started some line art for a cultist from the forth sect of the church and I have a couple more of these guys to start. And that is all for this week. Happy drawing!

So on some of my social medias, I like to post works in progress on Wednesday. Sometimes, I feel like we as artists feel pressure to post only our best work and to maintain a consistent "brand." Algorithms can keep us in our comfort zones and not dare to experiment. But to hell with that. I love seeing other artists' unfinished sketches, silly memes, and time lapses. I miss when social media was a third place and not this constant grind to sell ourselves. So, I have devoted at least Wednesday to show off what I working on. To be honest, I haven't finished many pieces over the past month. I've really been enjoying bringing my sketches into polished line work and adding to my WIP pile of shame. Here's what I've started from 3/14/24- 3/20/24: This is the most recent piece I started. Today, I finished the line art for the characters, but I'm going to put it to the side for now. I've got the urge to color something again. This guy is the Rooster Rebel. I've already started adding flat colors. I will probably go for a cell shaded look and have fun with the lighting. These four are members of a large scale cult known as the Curch of the Four Humors. I'll have to make a world building blog post where I go into the religion's lore at some point. So here's what I've done in the past week. I'll try to remember to check in next week. If not, you'll likely find a WIP Wednesday post on one of my social medias.

When all other social media websites fail or succumb to ai bros, you can find my ramblings here. The purpose of this blog will be a space to post WIPs, sketches, silly drawings, worldbuilding or story ideas, thoughts on current art events, and other tomfoolery.
